Our Story
Founded in 2008 by former Chicago Public Schools teacher Diane Okafor, Bright Futures Foundation began as a single after-school tutoring program in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, serving 28 students out of a church basement. Sixteen years later, we operate at 14 locations across Chicago, partner with 42 schools, and have served more than 3,200 young people. What started as one teacher's conviction that every child deserved a fair shot has grown into one of Chicago's most recognized youth-serving organizations.
Our Mission
We believe every young person deserves access to the support, guidance, and opportunities that set them up for a successful future — regardless of zip code, income, or circumstance. Our programs meet students where they are, providing the academic support, adult mentorship, and career pathways that research shows make the biggest difference. We don't just help students pass tests — we help them imagine what's possible and give them the tools to get there.
Our Impact
87% of our students graduate high school, compared to the 77% citywide average. 94% of Career Launch participants who complete the program are placed in internships or apprenticeships with our employer partners. In 2025, we awarded $250,000 in scholarships to 50 graduating seniors across Chicago. These aren't just numbers — they represent young people whose trajectories have changed because someone showed up for them consistently.
Our Team
Bright Futures is led by Executive Director James Whitfield, a Northwestern Kellogg MBA and former nonprofit executive who joined in 2019. Our program team includes Maria Santos (Program Director), David Kim (Career Programs Manager), and Latasha Williams (Community Partnerships). Our 12-person staff is supported by over 180 active volunteers who contribute thousands of hours each year as tutors, mentors, and event organizers.
